Grass cultivation in a Vertical Farm
To preserve valuable agricultural land for trees, nature, and increased grazing, research is being conducted to determine the economic feasibility of growing grass for cows in a vertical farm.
This project will begin with an exploratory study on grass growth in a vertical farm at the Delphy Improvement Centre.
This phase should answer the following questions:
- Which light regime and climate settings (temperature, relative humidity, airflow, and air direction) are best for growing grass in a vertical farm?
- Which cultivation system and irrigation strategy are best, and which watering method (overhead or ebb-and-flow) is best?
- How can we achieve regrowth without mold growth?
This project was made possible by a grant from Fieldlab Vertical Farming and Greenport Horti Campus and is co-funded by the European Union.
Research period: January 2026 – May 2026
This project is made possible in part by support from EFRO-Kansen voor West 3 and the province of South Holland.
