Acceleration towards energy-efficient full-LED cultivation of lilies

This study examined the prevention of leaf quality problems in energy-efficient full-LED lily cultivation. Since switching to full-LED, growers are increasingly reporting symptoms such as chlorosis, leaf tips, and tip burn, especially at higher light levels. These problems limit opportunities for further sustainability improvements, as growers often rely on additional energy input to prevent damage.

The goal of this project was to investigate the role of nutrient strategy (particularly the K/Ca ratio), substrate conditions, and climate settings in the development of leaf problems such as leaf tips and chlorosis. In two consecutive winter cultivation periods, various combinations of K/Ca ratios, EC, and substrate (fresh/used) were tested on two cultivars with different susceptibility profiles. Careful measurements were taken of leaf quality, crop growth, nutrient uptake, and energy consumption.

Delphy acted as project executor: setting up and supervising the trial, collecting and analyzing the data, and translating the results into practical insights for the sector. The added value of this research lies in developing knowledge that allows growers to optimize their cultivation strategies, ensuring high product quality even under energy-efficient conditions. This contributes to the further sustainability of greenhouse horticulture.

Involvement in follow-up research is possible. Growers, suppliers, and other chain partners are invited to contribute ideas for new test setups or to share practical data so that insights can be further validated.

Research duration: October 2024 – August 2025

This project/research was realized within the framework of the “Greenhouse as Energy Source” program, the innovation and action program of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature, and Greenhouse Horticulture Netherlands.
The project was carried out at the Delphy Improvement Centre in Bleiswijk in collaboration with other private companies.

The final report is only available in Dutch.
