Innovative tree cultivation in the spotlight at Notkamp Tree Nursery

31 October 2025

On Thursday 9 October, Notkamp Tree Nursery in De Lutte hosted the very first demonstration day of the BUDO project “Tree cultivation in the spotlight: sustainability in Overijssel”. The day was entirely devoted to innovation and sustainability in tree cultivation and attracted many interested growers from the region.

After a warm welcome with coffee and traditional Twents krentewegge (currant bread), the visitors were divided into groups and given a tour of the company to learn about the latest developments. The diversity of the demonstrations clearly showed how widespread innovation in the sector has become.

Mechanisation

Lauwen Jacobs demonstrated the E-vario wieder, a smart hoeing machine with crop recognition that works with extreme precision in and between rows. The Ezendam STM06-2H-Auto, which can plant and prune automatically, also impressed with the labour savings this technology delivers.

Demonstrations

Bioline presented the Sprayvent, the first liquid application system for the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis, while Andela demonstrated with the Electro Weeder how weeds, even stubborn root weeds, can be effectively controlled with electricity. In addition, attention was paid to water management in agriculture and the practical possibilities of level-controlled drainage in Overijssel, including the current subsidy schemes.

Buxus

Delphy gave a demonstration on a special Vixeran demo field with Buxus plants, where it was shown how nitrogen fixers can help to grow strong, healthy plants with less fertiliser. The new TTS planting machine also attracted a lot of interest. The machine operates largely automatically and can plant large numbers of plants in the open ground with just one person, a clear step towards more efficient working in the nursery.

Visitors were enthusiastic about the format and content of the day. Thanks in part to the excellent collaboration between Notkamp and Delphy, it was an inspiring and successful first edition. Next year, the BUDO demonstration day will certainly be repeated. For those who cannot wait that long, Delphy is organising an in-depth workshop on sustainability in tree cultivation at Notkamp in January, as part of the BUDO demonstration project.

The demonstration day was organised by the BUDO demonstration project (Boomteelt Uitgelicht: Duurzaamheid in Overijssel, or Tree Cultivation in the Spotlight: Sustainability in Overijssel) and is co-financed by the European Union and the province of Overijssel.
