Interdisciplinary approach to tomorrow’s challenges:
Strengthening Center of Excellence for Sustainability by innovative training methods on Water food nexus and climate Smart agricultural knowledge.
Agriculture is a significant sector of the Egyptian economy, contributing of around 11.3% of the country’s gross domestic product. The agricultural sector accounts for 28% of all jobs, and over 55% of employment in Upper Egypt is agriculture-related.
Egypt’s agriculture sector is dominated by small farms using traditional practices that do not meet international standards and cannot compete with the rising challenges of climate change that severely effects on production.
The CPI of the project indicates that the long-term impact is:
- Water efficiency in agriculture is increased;
- Promote agricultural growth;
- Promote sustainability transition in the Agri-food system.
This project is considered the second tailor-made training (TMT+) Delphy conducted in cooperation with Ain Shams University that was funded by Nuffic.
This project aims to strengthen the capacity of the Center of Excellence in Sustainability (CoES), by providing them with a wide range of topics like: open field cultivation, protected cultivation, water management, Crop protection (IPM), sharing knowledge and Entrepreneurship. With a special focus of making the content gender exclusive and making the participants aware of all the sustainable practices that can be done in order to improve the production, be more environmentally friendly, and able to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Connection with Sustainable Development Goals
The project focused on improving the current knowledge of the participants from Ain Shams University in different topics in order to provide them with solutions to the current challenges in the agricultural sector of Egypt and encourage them to find new innovations to mitigate the coming challenges as well.
