Providing smallholder farmers hydroponic methods (ProSal-Hydro)

Providing smallholder farmers hydroponic methods to combat soil salinity and water scarcity (ProSal-Hydro)

The ProSal-Hydro project introduces a low-tech, low-cost hydroponic system (LTLCH) to tackle water scarcity and soil salinization in Egypt’s Nile Delta.

Using 90% less water than traditional farming, this innovative system eliminates soil-borne diseases and boosts crop yields, offering smallholder farmers a sustainable alternative.

Through field testing, technical support, capacity building, and community-driven adaptation, ProSal-Hydro empowers farmers to adopt resilient practices.

Supported by Dutch expertise, the project aims to secure food and water sustainability while fostering economic viability, especially to address the growing challenges of climate change.

Workshop on Advancing Climate and Water-Smart Agriculture in Egypt!

We successfully conducted the second workshop under the ProSal project, showcasing key project results and progress to date. This event was held in collaboration with the Dutch-funded BUCRA project, bringing together Dutch and Egyptian expertise to tackle climate resilience and water-smart agriculture through complementary approaches:

  • BUCRA: Enhancing sustainable farming practices through land consolidation concept and by crop (re)introduction, farmer training, improved irrigation techniques, and market linkages.
  • ProSal-Hydro: Tackling soil and water salinity by developing an innovative hydroponics solution for saline agriculture and water resource management.

The workshop served as a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among a diverse group of stakeholders, including; Egyptian government representatives, The Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt, International organizations & NGOs, Academic institutions & researchers, And Private sector leaders
Together, we explored actionable strategies to drive sustainable agricultural transformation in Egypt, reinforcing our shared commitment to climate adaptation and water efficiency.
