BUCRA (Building Unity for Climate Resilient Agriculture)

Building Unity for Climate Resilient Agriculture (BUCRA) is a transformative initiative aimed at empowering smallholder farmers in Egypt’s Nile Delta, particularly in Qahbunah village, Sharqia governorate. The project bridges the gap between traditional farming practices and modern, climate-smart agriculture through a combination of field demonstrations, digital tools, and collaborative learning.

BUCRA addresses critical challenges such as water scarcity, climate change, land fragmentation, and limited market access. By introducing innovative farming techniques and digital solutions, the project enhances productivity, strengthens market linkages, and fosters sustainable livelihoods.

Key components of BUCRA include:

  • Demonstration Plots: showcase improved irrigation systems (e.g., drip irrigation), crop rotation, and climate-resilient agriculture.
  • Digital Agriculture: Tools provide farmers with real-time advice on crop suitability and irrigation, delivered via mobile apps.
  • Blended Learning: Training is delivered through Farmer Field Schools and offline-friendly digital platform, ensuring accessibility even in low-tech environments.
  • Community Empowerment: The project promotes land use consolidation, and revitalizes local cooperatives to build a more unified and resilient farming community.
  • Market Integration: BUCRA connects farmers with off-takers, improving crop quality and securing fair prices.

Impact Goals:

  • Improve soil health and water efficiency.
  • Increase crop yields and income stability.
  • Strengthen local institutions and farmer networks.
  • Promote sustainable farming practices aligned with Egypt’s climate and development goals.
