Introduction to Strawberry Cultivation

Strawberry cultivation is increasingly important in horticulture worldwide. With the expertise of consultants of Delphy this course will provide knowledge and skills to start or to upgrade your strawberry production. The participants are international, (relatively) new in strawberry cultivation and are active in middle of upper layer of management. During this five-day intensive course basic management technology, crop cultivation and socio-economic managerial aspects will be highlighted. Practical training and field trips to relevant companies and places are part of the course.

The outline below is a proposed outline and will be adjusted for each group of participants to fully meet their demands.

Course Program (changes may occur for organisational reasons)

Day 1: Morphology strawberry plant & plantphysiology

  • Introduction of program, participants and Delphy
  • Plant = factory
    A plant is a sugar producing factory. How does the plant function and what parts does a plant have? What is the difference between growth and development? The basis of all production is the process of photosynthesis. To have a good understanding more basics of plant physiology are discussed including the difference between respiration and transpiration.
  • Strawberry morphology & physiology
    A closer look to the strawberry plant. Photo period response groups. Plant morphology and translation of the physiological processes to strawberry. Final topic flowermapping: what is flowermapping and how to read it.
  • Field visit to a strawberry grower.

Day 2: Cultivation and Management

  • Propagation, cultivation and production systems
    Information about the Dutch way of propagating and cultivating strawberries. Different production systems are shown and explained. Other topics are strawberry varieties, planttypes and NAK certification.
  • Group discussion
    Discussion about the way of growing strawberries of the participants. How strawberries are grown, under what conditions and what are the results? The goal is to learn from each other experiences and sharing of knowledge.
  • Labour management
    This module will address company organisation, production planning and greenhouse labour management. How do you keep your workers motivated? How can you monitor and optimize the labour?
  • Field visit to a strawberry grower.

Day 3: Climate and Next Generation Growing

  • Greenhouse Climate
    Main reason for placing a greenhouse or other protective structure is to be able to control the climate. But what is an optimal climate for a plant and how to achieve this? This is explained in the lecture Greenhouse Climate. Ventilation, use of screens and heating are part of this module. In addition to the lecture and depending on the group a workshop on the Mollier diagram will be added to the program.
  • Translation of Greenhouse Climate to Strawberry Climate
    A closer look to the climate condition due to strawberry. Focus is on greenhouse cultivation.
  • Next Generation Growing
    Explaining the idea’s of next Generation Growing in strawberry. Delphy organized a trial in 2017/2018. Ideas, implementation and results will be discussed during the presentation and excursion.
  • Field visit to Delphy Improvement Centre to see the trial(s) in strawberry and other crops. Taking a closer look to the climate computer and see the theory in practice.

Day 4: Crop Protection

  • Pests and diseases strawberry
    This module addresses a very important topic: crop protection. Pests and diseases may reduce the potential yield and are important to control. Through scouting pests or diseases are discovered and monitored in the crop. Once the threshold is reached measure should be taken by application of biologic control or application of chemicals. Integrated pest management (IPM) is considered to be the most favourable way of crop protection.
  • Crop Monitoring
    To understand if your changed production methods have any effect you need to understand and know in what stage your crop is. Developing crop registration tactics support the trainees on the long run on this subject. With the information from the monitoring distance support is a possibility.
  • Field visit to a supplier or grower (to be determined).

Day 5: Substrate, soil and irrigation

  • Substrate & Irrigation
    Irrigation is of major importance to the plant. It provides water for transportation of nutrients, filling the cells to have their strenght (turgor) as well as cooling of the plant. The methods of irrigation as well as a suitable irrigation strategy are discussed during this module.
  • Workshop nutrient calculation
    Fertilization, including a calculation excercise.
  • Latest developments in the Netherlands
    During this session the present developments in strawberry cultivation in the Netherlands and different areas in the world are discussed.
  • Field visit to a substrate producer and a lecture.
