“Introduction to Bulb Flower production”

This course is specially designed for new growers of bulb flowers. For advanced bulb flower growers a tailor made training can be offered. This five day intensive course on cut flower production of various bulb flowers contains both open field and protected production as well as bulb flowers as potted plants. Topics addressed are choice of assortment to grow, substrate, fertilizer, irrigation, greenhouse climate, crop protection and post-harvest treatment. Field visits will illustrate the Dutch state of art cultivation as well as the market.  Upon completion of the course participants are able to grow bulb flowers at their own location.

Day 1: Introduction to the course, the sector and plant physiology

  • Introduction of Delphy and participants of the training
  • Sector overview of flowers bulbs and bulb flower production worldwide and in the Netherlands, trends and developments.
  • Plant = factory: Considering the plant as a sugar producing factory there is a need to understand the influences of various factors on this factory. Topics addressed are botany of flower bulbs followed by explanation of the growth and development of various parts of the plant. Plant physiology will explain photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration and the various growth factors like light, CO2, temperature and humidity.
  • Field visit: in depth explanation of state-of-the-art greenhouse systems and cultivation concepts in the Improvement Centre
  • Vase life test: setting up a vase life test with lily or tulip

Day 2: Set up of flower bulb company; cultivation of lily in theory and practice

  • General requirements for starting flower bulb production: types of greenhouses, layout, cultivation systems, cold store, soil, equipment, etcetera
  • Cultivation of lily
    • Information about different lily groups, bulb types and varieties. General info about bulb size, number of flowers, height and growing periods.
    • General growing conditions, soil and fertilizer, symptoms of fertilizer deficiency and excesses, climate, diseases, viruses and pest management.
  • Field visit: visit a grower of lily flowers growing lilies in the soil and visiting a grower growing lilies in boxes filled with pot soil.

Day 3: Cultivation of tulip in theory and practice

  • Information about different tulip groups and varieties. General info about bulb size, number of flowers, height and growing periods.
  • General growing conditions, soil and fertilizer, climate, diseases and pest management, hydroponic.
  • Field visit: visit a grower of tulips flowers growing in soil and visiting a grower growing tulips in hydroponics.

Day 4: Visit flower auction and breeder, cultivation of zantedeschia

Depending on the group and time of the year:

    • Visit to a breeder of lilies
    • Visit to modern nursery with tulips production under LED light
    • Visit to research centre to see the latest innovations.
  • Cultivation of zantedeschia
    • Information about the different varieties of zantedeschia. General info about bulb size, height and growing periods.
    • General growing conditions, soil and fertilizer, climate, diseases and pest management, greenhouse conditions.

Day 5: Cultivation of some special bulbs, gladiolus, iris, post-harvest management, new developments

  • Information about some varieties of special bulbs. General info about bulb size, height and growing periods.
  • General growing conditions, soil and fertilizer, climate, diseases and pest management, greenhouse conditions.
  • Vase life test: checking the results of the vase life test with lily or tulip started on Monday
  • Explanation of post-harvest topics
  • The latest development in the Netherlands, The New Cultivation, LED light etcetera
  • Round table with final discussion, evaluation and certification
